Aid always extended to imam, religious teachers
Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: Main Section
PONTIAN: The government is aware of the welfare and needs of mosque administrators, imam and religious teachers and have taken steps to address them.
"For instance, beginning this year, the monthly allowance for imam was increased from RM450 to RM750 while the allowance for religious teachers was increased to RM800 from RM500," said Datuk Jailani Ngah, political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, at the opening of the southern region "mosques of excellence" seminar here yesterday.
"We are also looking into increasing the allowance for bilal nationwide."
Some 700 participants from Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan attended the seminar.
Jailani also urged mosque administrators to embrace information technology as part of efforts to attract more people, especially the younger generation, to mosques.
"There should be an ICT committee at each mosque. Mosques should provide free Internet access for the community," said Jailani, adding that any announcement on their activities could be made via the Net.
He urged mosque officials to organise more community-based activities, such as sporting events, tuition and bazaars.
"By having these activities, people would go to mosques more often and not go just to perform their daily prayers."

VIC:Telstra workers at Moe to be laid off
MELBOURNE, Feb 16 AAP - More than 100 Telstra call centre workers in Victoria's east
have been told their jobs will be axed, with some going to the Philippines.
Telstra will close its Moe call centre on April 13, meaning its 114 workers will have
to look for new jobs.
Telstra spokeswoman Karina Keisler said all staff had been told on Wednesday.
She said a new Telstra call centre in Melbourne's Docklands, with more than 1100 operators,
was expected to take most of the Telstra customer calls now being handled in Moe, with
any overflow to be handled in call centres in the Philippines.
"It's a tough decision and one we haven't taken lightly," Ms Keisler told AAP.
"It's a hard one to make and a hard one to communicate to your people but it's one
we've taken in the best interests of the company."
Ms Keisler said all Moe workers would receive job seeking assistance, including being
encouraged to apply for other Telstra roles, relocation assistance and retrenchment benefits.

Fed: Delay on Centaur search
BRISBANE, Dec 12 AAP - The departure of the ship heading the search for the sunken
World War II hospital ship Centaur has been delayed by several hours.
A group of scientists and explorers, armed with millions of dollars worth of equipment,
are still making preparations to search an area more than 59km wide, 30km east of Moreton
Island.
They were hoping to leave early on Saturday afternoon but that has been put back until 11pm.
Shipwreck hunter David Mearns said they were still testing equipment but were hopeful
of departing before midnight.
"We pushed back our departure time a little bit," Mr Mearns told AAP.
"Our sailing time was projected on the basis everything would be absolutely perfect
but that's rarely the case.
"We are still inside our schedule but that's not a big issue.
"We won't leave until we are ready."
A total of 268 non-combatants died when Centaur was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine
in May 1943.
The Centaur has never been found.
Leading the search will be the Seahorse Spirit, a 72m multi-purpose vessel.
Mr Mearns said there were 30 people on board the ship and they had a maximum of 35
days at sea to find the Centaur.

Cno: Aussie pair dare to dream in K2
By Jim Morton
BEIJING, Aug 23 AAP - Hannah Davis and Lyndsie Fogarty will "close the curtain" around
their boat as they dare to dream about sinking a kayaking legend at the Beijing Games
tomorrow.
Australia's K2 500m duo enter their final as rank outsiders at Shunyi Olympic Canoeing
Park despite a strong heat performance where they placed third behind Hungary and France.
The Hungarians, led by kayak legend Katalin Kovacs, are red-hot favourites for the
event, with Germany seen as their main rival after also drawing a middle lane following
a qualifying victory.
Kovacs, who has won four Olympic medals, is the K2 Olympic defending champion with
crew-mate Natasa Janic and has also won a litany of K1, K2 and K4 world titles in her
12-year international career.
But Fogarty and Davis have no fears of the 32-year-old great at their maiden Olympics
and will focus on their own performance.
"The door's wide open," said a bold Davis
"The Hungarians are some of the strongest girls in the world so it's what you expect
and it not a shock, we're trying to close the gap on them."
Fogarty indicated the pair could revel in the situation with no external pressure on
the underdogs.
"We want to make a stand out and be known as a strong country," she said.
"They (Hungary) look good but like we always say to each other before a race, close
the curtains and focus on ourselves.
"I wait for Hannah and Hannah just waits and feels for me and she just looks ahead
and focuses on our race.
"The medals are there for the taking."
Ken Wallace is Australia's strongest hope on the final day of canoeing finals in the
K1 500, challenging world champion Adam van Koeverden and K1 1000m world champion Tim
Brabants.
Wallace has posted two of the quickest times in the world this year and Canadian favourite
and training partner van Koeverden rates him a genuine threat for the title.

Vic: Twins may hold key to baby growth deficiency
MELBOURNE, April 29 AAP - They're becoming commonplace in the classrooms, now twins
may provide the answer to a mystery that their singleton siblings could not.
A Melbourne obstetrician is studying placentas from twin pregnancies in a bid to understand
- and ultimately reduce - in utero growth problems.
Nicola Bryan will test placentas from 30 sets of twins over two years to identify what
causes discordant growth in non-identical twins.
Results may ultimately help reduce in utero growth deficiency, which can lead to an
increased long-term risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hardening of the arteries
and diabetes.
A pilot study in singleton, or one-child, pregnancies identified a decreased expression
of the HLX (or homeobox) genes, which controls growth.
But studying twin pregnancies allows Dr Bryan to compare growth-deficient and normal
placentas from the same maternal environment.
"The singleton study doesn't allow for maternal variation," Dr Bryan said today.
"The twins study allows for controls (on influencing factors such as blood pressure
and diet) in mothers."
The numbers of twins are rising in Australia, due largely to an increase in the number
of older mothers - who are more likely to have a multiple birth - and the growing acceptance
of fertility programs.
Dr Bryan said while multiple pregnancy growth rates were more difficult to monitor,
information gained from the births was valuable.
Early results seemed to confirm the HLX theory, but there were still more genes to
test, she said.
Dr Bryan, a consultant obstetrician and research fellow at Melbourne's Royal Women's
Hospital, said poor growth in the womb had lifelong implications.
"We've always attributed poor growth to a placental cause but we need to identify the
placental cause to address it," she said.
"If (the problem is) picked up and addressed and the baby's delivered in good condition,
we're minimising the long-term problems."
Growth-restricted babies are smaller than 97 per cent of other babies at the time the
condition is discovered, which normally occurs during the later stages of gestation.
Doctors currently rely on scans to monitor a baby's growth rate throughout the remainder
of the pregnancy but identifying the cause of growth deficiency may lead to a breakthrough
treatment.
"We don't know what the strategy is yet, we don't know what the significance is of
the (HLX gene) discovery," Dr Bryan said.
"We hope to reduce the incidence of growth restriction and improve the outlook of babies
born small for gestation."
