Qld: Mystery of US sub deepens

Families of the lost crew of a World War Two American submarine believe the militarymay have covered up its possible sinking by friendly fire from Australian forces.

Officially the USS Triton was sunk off Papua New Guinea by depth charges from Japanesedestroyers on March the 15th, 1943.

But JEANINE ALLEN, whose father LLOYD MCKENZIE was among the 74 submariners lost atsea, believes the final resting place of the sub is off Moreton Island near Brisbane.

Speaking from her home in Virginia, Ms MCKENZIE's told Channel Nine that two weeksafter the USS Triton was supposed to have been sunk, a welcoming committee, complete withNavy band, mail delivery, fresh fruit and ice-cream, was waiting for the crew on the dockat New Farm on the Brisbane River.

The waiting party then heard reports of an Australian pilot destroying a Japanese submarineoff the entrance to Moreton Bay.

Ms ALLEN says she and other families just want to know the truth about what happened.

World War Two historian PETER DUNN says the truth may have been suppressed to maintainmorale among allied forces.
