Vic: Injured boxer dies

MELBOURNE, April 9 AAP - A boxer who was in a critical condition after hitting his
head on the canvas during a bout in Melbourne died in hospital today.

St Vincent's Hospital confirmed 29-year-old Gold Coast-based boxer Ahmad Popal died
at 11.15am (AEST).

Popal had been fighting for his life after hitting his head on the canvas on Friday
night in a state title bout in suburban Collingwood.

He was injured during the sixth round of a fight for the Victorian bantamweight championship
title against Tony Pappa.

Popal's injury sparked renewed calls by the Australian Medical Association for a ban on boxing.
